People moves: Hargreaves Lansdown, HSBC, and Rathbones

Hargreaves Lansdown has appointed Matt Benchener as its chief executive officer.

Benchener will take up the role in July 2026, subject to regulatory approval. He will join the firm in March for a handover period, working alongside existing interim CEO, Richard Flint. Benchener’s most recent role was at Vanguard, where he was a managing director and head of Vanguard Personal Investor. He was also a member of the Vanguard’s senior executive team. Since joining Vanguard in 2008, Benchener held several senior leadership roles across the organisation, including head of Personal Investor client service and operations, Personal Investor chief marketing officer, and roles in Vanguard’s Institutional and Corporate Strategy groups. When Benchener takes up the CEO role on a full-time basis from July, Flint will move to a new role on the board as deputy chair.

HSBC has named Valentín Valderrábano as chief commercial officer, International Wealth and Premier Banking (IWPB).

In the role, Valderrábano will focus on strategy execution for IWPB, driving wealth-led growth, enhancing customer experience, and strengthening the integration of digital and physical channels. He joins HSBC from Citibank, where he most recently served as chief operating officer for global wealth. He brings more than 20 years of experience in retail banking and wealth management to the role.

Rathbones Group has appointed two new investment directors: James Hall and Daniel Curtis.

They have both joined from Cazenove Capital, where they were portfolio directors, and will work in Rathbones’ Investment Management division. Hall brings more than 25 years of experience to the role and specialises in structured products, which he led at Cazenove. He worked at Cazenove for 18 years in private client portfolio management in senior roles, and previously worked for Schroders and BNY Mellon. Meanwhile, Curtis specialises in managing investment portfolios for private clients, trusts, and charities, and worked at Cazenove for nearly 12 years in a range of senior portfolio management roles. He started his career at Brewin Dolphin as an assistant investment manager in its Newcastle office.
